The military agreement that would allow US to install military bases in Colombia to fight drug trafficking and terrorism, was declared unconstitutional by the Court and it must be studied by the Congress. The government considered that the agreement should not need the review of the Congress, because, according with its position, it was an extension of a previous military agreement with Washington dated 1974.

Murdered in Medellin union leader

Luis Germán Restrepo Maldonado, 58 years old, president of the packaging union, was murdered in Medellín downtown by a gangster. Restrepo Maldonado was one of the unionist leaders who more defended the Free Trade Agreement with United States before the Congress of that country. President Álvaro Uribe gave him a recognition during the 35th anniversary of Sintraempaques, a packaging company, in November 2009. The authorities are investigating the crime.

Drug traffickers arrested in Colombia

The Colombian Police and the General National Prosecutor, arrested 11 men in Bogotá, Medellín and Cali, under the charge of drug trafficking, reported RCN and EnSemana. They belong to an international net of traffickers leaded by a man identified as ‘Gordillo’ (‘little fat one’.)

Valle del Cauca, leader in migration abroad

The south-western state of Valle del Cauca is the leader in the group of Colombians migrating to countries like Spain and United States, according to a research of El Tiempo newspaper. The 25 percent of the Colombian migrants abroad come from this region, which capital is Cali, one of the main urban and industrial centers of the coffee nation. It is estimated that about 4 million Colombians are residing abroad.

Thailand Arms DealerA court of Bangkok rejected this weekend the dossier that Colombia presented to favor the extradition of the presumed Russian drug and arms dealer Viktor Bout to the United States. The Thai judge alleged that the request was out of term, but included in the American appeal a complaint of Bout, known as the Merchant of Death.

Uribe in Europe to participate in the World Economic Forum

The possibilities of a meeting between Obama and Uribe became almost a myth. A Colombian, victim of violence in New Jersey

Wilter Sánchez, a 33 years old Colombian living in New Jersey, was victim of a violent attack last Wednesday. He was walking with his cousin Fernando Quincha toward a restaurant, when a car approached to them. The car stopped and five men came out. Fearing an attack, bot began to run, but Sánchez slipped on the snow. The five men kicked him in the face while shouting “Hispano” and insults.

Chávez asked Obama to rectify
