The article by WSJ’s journalist Mary Anastasia O’Grady, “The FARC’s Ecuadorean Friends” published on June 22, attracted the attention and wrath of Ecuadorean president Rafeal Correa. The reason is understandable: O’Grady takes the Colombian position that the Correa government is friendly with the Farc because of evidence allegedly found on the late Reyes’ computer. President Correa reacted strongly against this claim to the media and The Wall Street Journal. President Nicolas Sarkozy sent a communication to congratulate the reelection of Rafael Correa, the first president to follow a second term in the South American nation since decades ago and the first to give a political stability to it after ten years of “temporary governments” since president Jorge Jamil Mahuad Witt was forced to resign in 21rst January 2000 by indigenous demonstrations and a military revolt.
A socialist that has alined his country with Venezuela and Bolivia, Correa has followed a intensive program of reforms and transformations that have given to him a high rank of popularity.
Although rumors of fraud have not been demonstrated, most Ecuadorians have prefered the leader who has led their nation since January 2007. He will be president again until 2013 and he won the position with 51.9 percent of votes that avoid a second round. The conflict between Colombia and Ecuador is one year older and the solution is far to become real. At least is the impression given by General Secretary of the American States Organization, José Miguel Insulza, in Bogotá yesterday after the declaration of president Correa in Quito. For Insulza the words of Correa were just as normal as it has been his attitude all the time of the debate with Uribe. President Correa stated that Quito will not reestablish diplomatic relation with Bogotá as long he is the president in Ecuador.
In March 2008 Colombian troops attacked a camp of the Farc guerrillas where was one of the strongest man of that rebel group, Rafael Reyes, known also as the official and international Farc’s spokesman.
