The 85 percent of those who have been arrested by the Police of Cali with illegal gangs, are now on the streets, said Cali’s major Jorge Iván Ospina to Caracol Radio. He said also that the Democratic Security, the government’s program to reduce the influence of armed illegal groups like paramilitaries and guerrilla in Colombia, must be done also in cities like Cali that is a victim of gangs and criminality.

New incident of gangs in Medellín

A new terrorist attack of gangs in Medellín this weekend, this time in the easter barrio of Manrique Santa Inés, Northeast Commune. Gangs attacked during the night of Friday some houses of the barrio. There were also disturbances in the 13th Commune’s  Barrio Juan XIII, reported the Police of Medellín. Major Alonso Salazar said that it is the intention of the criminals to involve civilians in the conflict. The barrio was militarized by army and police and a man was killed in clashes. The man was identified as alias El Viejo (The Elder) and he was the chief of Los Balcones, a criminal terrorist gang heavy involved with mafia and murders. The criminal has been arrested several times, but he was always released without any prosecutions, although several evidences to prove his participation in terrorism and drug trafficking.

With a city discussion on the need to do or not a military take over of the 13th Commune of Medellín as it was in 2002, the security council that met this weekend in Plaza Mayor took some decisions to control the terror of the gang confrontations in the barrios. They contemplated the creation of a preventive center to study the factors of violence, the increase of police forces, a plan to vigil the streets of the barrios and the installation of security video cameras in the Commune.

Medellin Police operating in the 13th commune

The Medellín Police and the Army made operations in the troublesome 13th Commune of Medellín, west of the city, that was the bloody scenario of a battle between powerful gang groups. According to report of the 4th Brigade of the Army, 11 persons were arrested by the authorities and there is even a minor of 15 years old that is accused of being the messenger between the gangs.

Gang war shatters peace in Medellín

Technically the positive transformation of Medellín is over and we are back to former violence by a real and bloody gang war. Sadly we have to recognize it and we must not under any circumstances ignore that the city is currently under a threat of permanent terrorism. Looking to the map of confrontation among gang criminals, the white areas are constricted to La Candelaria (downtown), El Estadio and El Poblado. The municipality reports 1,057 killings in 2010 and 2,395 persons who were displaced from their barrios due to terrorist attacks from gangsters, especially in the most marginalized areas.

Gang war in the 13th Commune of Medellín

Yesterday, August 11, was a very busy day in Barrio Juan XXIII, in the 13th Commune, west of Medellín. Two criminal gangs, La Agonía and La Divisa, staged one of the most violent battles of the year in the poorest quarters of the city. Fighting for territory, La Agonía, lit. ´The Agony,´ invaded the territory of La Divisa (The Motto) with about 50 men that entered the barrio in the first hours of the day and they shot anybody who would face them.

Medellín night buses in controversy

The new service of night buses for Medellín created a controversy among the bus companies and Major Alonso Salazar, according to an article of El Colombiano. Medellín, a city of about 2 million inhabitants out of its metropolitan area, has 176 urban routes of buses. 65 were about to operate 24 hours according to an agreement with the municipality.

Two former mayors for a country

Both men have a virtue that other candidates lack: they are not properly politicians in the Colombian way, but very practical. At the same time, young people like them. Their language is rather simple and their thought rather deep.

The names of Mockus and Fajardo came by surprise united in a single political program for the next Colombian elections. The former popular major of Medellín, Sergio Fajardo, resigned to his presidential candidacy and joined team with the former and also popular major of Bogotá, Antanas Mockus. The result was also unexpected: Mockus gained the second position in the preferences of votes according to the last surveys.
