A Venezuelan court for the protection of rights of children and youth, prohibited newspapers to publish photos of violence and blood. The law was ruled in a first moment for El Nacional newspaper after it published a picture of the Morgue of Caracas to talk about the numbers of murders in the city. The journal that is considered in the opposition to the government, was ordered to avoid the publication of photos that can ‘infringe the psychological and moral integrity of boys, girls and teenagers.‘ Caracas is considered so far one of the most violent cities of the world with an alarming increase of criminality, a fact that the newspaper was denouncing through the picture.

Another anniversary more of the absent of one of our more standing journalists: Jaime Garzón. He was murdered on August 13, 1999 at 5:45 AM. Since then, the crime became a kind of movie with more killings, mysteries and challenges for the justice. The terrorist attack to Caracol Radio just a day before the anniversary of Jaime makes us to understand something: impunity is the main seed of violence in our country. Since impunity will continue its reign on our soil, criminals will continue killing, destroying our dreams, threaten our future… Just we need more men like Jaime. Just we need a real justice to give peace to our dead and hope to our children.

The office for the attention of emergencies of Bogotá made a census of the families affected by the explosion in front to the Caracol Radio headquarters this Thursday morning. Authorities, politicians, journalists and many others are analyzing now in Colombia who could be behind the terrorist attack against Caracol Radio in Bogotá this week. Sadly, our country has many enemies, the enemies of democracy, freedom, moral and civilization. There is a general prudence in giving the responsibility to any suspect, though for some sources it could be likely the Farc guerrillas. The message is clear: the authors of this barbarian act want to impose their points of view at the dawn of this new government.

On 2009/09/29, in Culture, by Albeiro Rodas

Newspaper_vendorPrague. Evidently the printed newspapers are facing a crisis in the time of digital journalism. The big companies of printed information must admit that sells on the streets of big cities have been reduced since the Internet revolution began in the 1990s. In this context, the French government proposes to give free, one-day-a-week newspaper subscription to every 18-to24 year old in the country to encourage newspaper reading and civic participation. It is a good option, not only for youth, but also for the same newspapers (and magazines). It would be a good idea for countries like Colombia or Latin America.

On 2009/05/16, in Politics, by Albeiro Rodas

restrepoJavier Darío Restrepo worked in El Colombiano for 17 years as a columnist of opinion. This is the prestigious daily newspaper of Medellín that was founded in 1912. He was suspended to continue under the argument that the administration was reorganizing the opinion section.

Of course, we have to understand the elements of how many see a threaten in the freedom of press to the Restrepo’s dismissal. At the same time, it shows us how much delicate is to think different in Colombia, an element that threaten the maturity of our democracy in a serious way.
