Prague. Evidently the printed newspapers are facing a crisis in the time of digital journalism. The big companies of printed information must admit that sells on the streets of big cities have been reduced since the Internet revolution began in the 1990s. In this context, the French government proposes to give free, one-day-a-week newspaper subscription to every 18-to24 year old in the country to encourage newspaper reading and civic participation. It is a good option, not only for youth, but also for the same newspapers (and magazines). It would be a good idea for countries like Colombia or Latin America. (more…)
Javier Darío Restrepo worked in El Colombiano for 17 years as a columnist of opinion. This is the prestigious daily newspaper of Medellín that was founded in 1912. He was suspended to continue under the argument that the administration was reorganizing the opinion section.
The action became a news in Colombia and opened the debate on the freedom of press. Of course, we have to understand the elements of how many see a threaten in the freedom of press to the Restrepo’s dismissal. At the same time, it shows us how much delicate is to think different in Colombia, an element that threaten the maturity of our democracy in a serious way. (more…)
If you read the history of journalism in Colombia, you will find a name: El Espectador, the oldest Colombian newspaper that returns to its daily edition.
Fidel Cano founded El Espectador on March 22, 1887 in Medellín as a political, literature, news and business newspaper. In 1915 was published in Bogotá and it remains in that city since 1923. It suffered censorship from Conservative governments after the killing of the presidential candidate Jorge Eliecer Gaitán in 1949 and it was attacked in 1953 together with El Tiempo. (more…)
The Colombian Magazine Semana received the prestigious King of Spain Journalist Award for denounce the Para-politic. During several articles, journalist Alejandro Santos denounced those politicians who were involved with Paramilitary groups or recived economical support for their candidate campaigns for official seats.

PHNOM PENH: 1st November 2007 – Social communication students from Don Bosco Sihanoukville leaded by the Colombian communicator Albeiro Rodas, visited The Cambodian Daily, The Mirror and Globe Magazine in the capital on October 30, three of the most important of the print media in Cambodia. The boys, who are starting a two year program in social communication with subjects like journalism, television, radio, Internet and social work, had the opportunity to talk to “real” journalists and ask questions such as how they get information, the risks of being a journalist, and many others.
