The Constitutional Court is near to give its verdict over the possibility of another reform to open the way for a third reelection of President Uribe. I can guess that it will be possible and I can guess that President Uribe will run again for a third period at the Nariño House. An unpopular opposition, a very fanatic Uribista party, the obsession of President Hugo Chávez for Colombia and the fear for the return of the chaotic situation of Colombia before 2002, will play a very important part in the decision of most Colombians. The U.S. State Department on Friday denied Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez’s allegations that the use of bases in Colombia is part of a strategy to control South America.
At a summit of South American leaders, held earlier on Friday in Argentina, Chavez read parts of a U.S. military White Book and concluded the U.S. was using the war on drugs and the bases in Colombia as an excuse to forward operations that seek to dominate the hemisphere. (more…)

Three Latin American intellectuals, the Peruvian writer Mario Vargas Llosa and the Mexican Jorge Castañeda Gutman and Enrique Krauze, accepted the challenge of president Hugo Chávez to open a public debate in his program “Aló Presidente!.
The program of the president has a special edition this week with a daily emission between 8 and 10 PM, the hours with more audience. The program is of course directed by the president who challenged the intellectuals of the international forum on democracy that is being hold in Caracas this week. (more…)

The presence of prestigious Peruvian writer Mario Vargas Llosa has risen concerns in the Venezuela of president Hugo Chávez, famous for his socialist project for the South American nation. Vargas Llosa, one of the most important authors of the Hispanic literature, came to Caracas for the International Congress on Freedom and Democracy organized by the Center of Promulgation of the Economic Knowledge for Freedom (Cedic). The former president of Bolivia, Jorge Quiroga, is also in the Congress.
Tensions rose already when the Peruvian author arrived to the Maiquetía International Airport and was retained for 90 minutes by the Venezuelan authorities. (more…)
The president of Venezuela, Hugo Chávez, arrived to Tehran to pay a “strategic visit” in order to tie political and economical links with the ayatollahs’ regime. He will visit China and Japan after.
Chávez will meet president Mahmud Ahmadineyad, a radical conservative that has visited Venezuela as well and some other Latin American nations. Iran, as Venezuela, is one of the main oil world exporters.
The government of Tehran said to the press that the visit of president Chávez intends to intensify the commercial ties between both, the Asian and South American nation, and their good relations.
Both countries want to found a bank entity that will start with a shared investment of 1,600 dollars and will be named the Venezuelan-Iran Fund. Either Venezuela or Iran claim that the bank intents to face the global financial crisis creating an alternative financial system, although to some experts the project is difficult to success. Cartagena | ColPas. The meeting of the two most controversial presidents of Latin America in Cartagena de Indias was rather friendly. Even if journalists touched hot subjects like the Farc hostages that broke relations between Chávez and Uribe since November 2007 or the issue of the reelection that both leaders are looking. But the most important thing was the agreement that will help small enterprises in both countries and the perspective of a common currency. (more…)
