Modern Colombia is a country leaded by men in a time where women have a higher position in politics in most of the nations of the Americas. But even if it is a fact to think about, women have a big part in the history of our nation since colonial times. To underline their presence is a duty that we cannot avoid.

It wasn’t long before Bertha Trujillo decided she’d taken a fancy to the bull. A senior instructor at Cali’s bullfighting academy in Colombia, Trujillo walked by the breeding pens every day after she finished teaching class, and in one corral roamed the biggest, meanest animal she had ever seen. Even though the bull charged the fence and scuffed the ground in frenzy if anyone dared peek over the gate, she nicknamed him ‘Cariñoso,’ or ‘Sweetie.’
Although several women in Colombia belong to the national army, the possibility to become a general was not contemplated until now. But time changes and the opportunity for the women to get the highest military rank came. 60 young ladies were incorporated in the studies to become military generals, according to the report of General Juan Carlos Salazar, official director of the Colombian army. In an interview to Caracol Radio, General Salazar said that the presence of women in administration ranks is usual and they could become colonels as the highest rank for women, but now they can apply to the maximum level.

Although this interview was done last November in preparation for the Carnival of Pasto, this interview shows a little how is Gabriela Días del Castillo, the Queen of the Carnival and how the Carnival itself is prepared.

It is already a tradition that every year in the Carnival of Black and White, the Carnival Corporation (Corpocarnaval) and the judge committee, select the Queen for the feast celebrations at the beginning of the year.
