Colombian Camilo Villegas is leader at the Golf Buick Invitational of San Diego, California. He scored 63 – 1 eagle, 8 birdies and 1 bogey. He overcame U.S. Davis Love III and Australian Aaron Baddeley in 3 scores, both of them with 66 less 6.  Villegas is looking his third victory at the PGA’s Tour after his past performances in BMW Championship and The Tour.

Camilo Villegas has already won hearts at Birkdale… and may yet win the Jug

CAMILO Villegas may be an overnight sensation in this part of the world thanks to Friday’s record-breaking second round of 65 that started with two bogeys and ended with an incredible sequence of five birdies, but in America the 26-year-old is already a household name. In Miami, where he’s based, the Colombian is so popular with Florida’s Hispanic population that he draws bigger crowds than Tiger Woods, a fact that he embraces. Villegas, you see, has star quality, and he knows it.

Villegas shines on open debut

A dazzling finish of five successive birdies gave the 26-year-old Colombian – not even in the event until American Kenny Perry turned down his spot two weeks ago – a five under par 65 and rocketed him into second place in the clubhouse, just one sjhort back from two-time winner and current leader Greg Norman.

Villegas, one over at halfway as a result, summed up his impression of British seaside golf in one word. “Funky”.

As much buzz as there was around Doral last year when Tiger Woods marched to yet another win on the Blue Monster, it was nowhere near the decibel level reached in 2006.

That was when PGA Tour rookie Camilo Villegas strode around Doral, and the flashy, handsome young Colombian collected a huge and enthusiastic gallery that rivaled those following Woods, Phil Mickelson and the tour’s other top stars.
