Most of the international media underlined that José Mujica, the new president of Uruguay, is a former guerrilla who changed weapons for democracy in order to arrive to power. The point is important for a country like Colombia, where guerrillas have five decades trying to do so through a long and painful war. José Mujica (say in English Joseph Mo-he-ca), a 74 years old leftist, became president of the Uruguayans in an official act in the Parliament last 1rst of March. Bogotá. The Colombian Constitutional Court did not approve the referendum that would allow President Álvaro Uribe Vélez to run for a third presidential period. The project of law was rejected by 7 votes against and 2 in favor. Mauricio González Cuervo, President of the Court, announced officially that the project has several irregularities in its procedure that does not follow the Constitution and the legislation. (more…)
The Constitutional Court is near to give its verdict over the possibility of another reform to open the way for a third reelection of President Uribe. I can guess that it will be possible and I can guess that President Uribe will run again for a third period at the Nariño House. An unpopular opposition, a very fanatic Uribista party, the obsession of President Hugo Chávez for Colombia and the fear for the return of the chaotic situation of Colombia before 2002, will play a very important part in the decision of most Colombians. This week Facebook was news in Colombia: the 14th Judge of Bogotá ordered the arrest of a student of prestigious university Jorge Tadeo Lozano. Nicolás Castro Prestelt created a group in the popular social network that he called ‘Me comprometo a matar a Jerónimo Alberto Uribe, hijo de Álvaro Uribe’ (I commit myself to kill Jerónimo Uribe, son of Álvaro Uribe). He promoted also another group with the title ‘No reelijas la rata que mata’ (Do not reelect the rat that kills).

For many people Piedad Córdoba is a traitor to the country. She is friend of Hugo Chávez, a sympathizer of Farc guerrilla and an opponent to the most popular president of the last 50 years in Colombia. For others, the Senator is the icon of courage, commitment, progressive ideas and the door to peace. For Oslo she was one of the most likely contenders to the Nobel peace prize. A court of Bangkok rejected this weekend the dossier that Colombia presented to favor the extradition of the presumed Russian drug and arms dealer Viktor Bout to the United States. The Thai judge alleged that the request was out of term, but included in the American appeal a complaint of Bout, known as the Merchant of Death. (more…)
A research leaded by groups of citizens with the support of some corporations and newspapers, evaluated results in Medellín in questions of security, services, education and other aspects of the Colombian metropolis during the current year. The results show for example that the city has a backward in the fighting against criminality in comparison with 2008 numbers. The publication of the study that is called ‘Medellín, cómo vamos’ (How we are), produced already debates in the city and changes in the administration of Major Alonso Salazar. (more…)
