The Ministry of Finances of Colombia, Luis Guillermo Plata, declared to the media that the negotiations with the European Union for a Free Trade Agreement closed successfully last 1rts of March. Production of the free zones, banana, sugar and coffee were among the main Colombian benefits of the new FTA with the powerful economical block. The Administrative Department of Statistics of Colombia, DANE (its acronym in Spanish) reported that unemployment is higher this year.
In the period August – October 2008 the national rate of unemployment was 10.8%.
This year to the same period it is 11.8%.
The global financial crisis produced its effects in the Colombian economy especially in the deterioration of the main sources of employment like industry and commerce.
While the Venezuela of Hugo Chávez is embarking itself in the celebrated ‘socialism of the 21rst century’, investors are running out of the country. President Uribe opened a Starch Plant in the Sucre department and said that rural areas must be benefited from industrialization. The project, located in Corozal, is thought to develop the plantations of yucca in the rural department and generate employment in the area.
