Composer Jorge Villamil dies in Bogota

The Colombian composer Jorge Villamil Cordovez, died last February 28 in Bogotá at the age of 80. He was author of more than 200 songs that became part of the national traditions in music. Villamil was born in El Cedral, a ranch near the city of Neiva in 1929. He studied medicine in the Javeriana University of Bogotá. In 1976 he abandoned his profession as a doctor and dedicated the rest of his years as a composer. (more…)

Sting comes to Colombia in May

Diageo spokeswoman Ximena Rengifo said to Caracol Radio that Sting, the British rock singer, will come to Colombia for the Buchanans Forever concert on May 6. He will perform with Chilean rock-pop singer Beto Cuevas in a charity event for poor children. (more…)

Colombian radio, 80 years on air

Radio_Nacional_de_ColombiaThe Colombian radio celebrates its 80th anniversary this year. In 1929 the South American nation began its first experiences of radio broadcasting in Barranquilla. HJN (after Radiodifusura Nacional,) was officially founded on September 5 but it had to wait some months to be on air. On December 8 the HKD signal transmitted a match of soccer and it is considered the first radio program in the Colombian territory, though it was listened by a small group of persons. (more…)

‘Blood and Rain’ got a Greek award

244 municipalities in high risk for elections 

03.08.2010 Ombudsman said that 244 municipalities of Colombia are at high risk for the coming elections. They could face constraint to the voter, disruption of the electoral contest, threats, restrictions on mobility and suffragan corruption, warns the office. The threats come from the Farc guerrillas and the new armed groups, especially in the northern coast and the southwest of Colombia. General Freddy Padilla declared to the press that the security forces will be alert in all the national territory to guarantee safety during the elections.
